Here are some images of an exemplary outdoor lighting installation that achieves good urban design.

Clicking on the small images will open a full-screen view.

This site uses FCO lighting exclusively. Virtually all the light emitted is confined to areas that require lighting.  Note that the houses in the background (left in image) are not affected by light trespass.

In this view, note that the light is confined to areas that require to be lit, and there is no light spilling into adjacent areas, off of the property.  This cannot be said of the orange street light to the left.  Note the orange glow of light that baths this property - a telltale sign of light trespass from the street light.  Also, note the lack of glare, that is the attenuation of light directly from the light bulb, and the excellent illumination of the area to be lit.

In this image, note the use of FCO fixtures on the building facade.  There are houses just outside the left of the image, and they are virtually unaffected by direct light trespass and glare. The light is directed to where it is needed, and not needlessly wasted to adjacent uses.  The overall effect of the lighting is appealing

This is the view of the property from an adjacent public park and residential area.  You can see the FCO facade fixtures just right of centre in the image. No light is spilling into the park or adjacent homes.  If all outdoor lighting were installed this way, the orange glow that can be seen in the sky (the ultimate waste of energy through poor lighting) could be significantly reduced.
