Region of Durham to Address Light Pollution

On July 9, 2003, Regional Council received a report from Mayor Doug Moffat, Chair of the Community Strategic Plan Steering Group, on the results and recommendations for the Durham Community Strategic Plan.

One of the key strategic environmental actions to be addressed is light pollution. While it is only a first step, it is an important one that will have an effect on the need for government policy to address light pollution.  This will pave the way for appropriate policies to be incorporated into the
Durham Regional Official Plan (now under review).  The DRAA-LPAC is co-ordinating input to that review, and your assistance is welcome. The outcomes remain to be seen, but given the strategic significance of addressing light pollution in the Community Plan, the outlook is positive for the Official Plan.

Thanks go to DRAA and LPAC members for their input to the Community Plan.

Regional Official Plan Update - your input required by November 28, 2003

Due to written submissions received by the Region Planning Department (included those from PLAC members), Light Pollution has been included in the Environmental Discussion Paper which is circulating to the public for comment. This is an important step, and pressure must be kept to ensure that some form of Light Pollution policy makes it into the Official Plan.  Read the extracts (34k PDF) from the Environmental Discussion Paper that references light pollution, and provide your input (by November 28, 2003) to the Regional Planning Department to show your support (see How to Help - Regional Plan).
