December Members' Meeting Agenda
"The Galilean Moons of Jupiter" by Frank Dempsey Frank describes some of the fascinating science of the Galilean satellites discovered in recent years, such as the electric and magnetic fields, sulfur volcanoes and crusts of ice above oceans of salty water that have been discovered.
"Lunar Occultations" by Mike Cook When the Moon passes between the Earth and a more distant object (star, planet, asteriod) the event is called an occultation. Mike will focus on occultations of stars by the Moon. During such an occultation, a star will suddenly disappear at the eastern limb of the Moon, and reappears at the western limb up to one hour later. Observing stellar occultations is one of the easiest activities that the amateur astronomer can undertake. The disappearance or reappearance of a star at the limb of the Moon is an extraordinary sight that reveals some of the mechanics of the Universe. Moreover, amateurs can report their observations which contribute toward the refinement of the Lunar profile and the stellar coordinates. Observing occultations are also useful for detecting double stars. The presentation will cover the basics of Lunar occultations, the equipment and methods needed for successful observations, and reporting procedures.
"Shoot the Moon" by Rob Faucher Continuing with the lunar theme, Rob explains how to capture stunning images of our own Moon.
"What's Up in the Night Sky" by Jeff Dutton Jeff takes us on a tour of celestial objects well positioned for viewing from mid-December through mid-Januaruy
Solar-filtered viewing of Venus transiting the Sun
Indoor streaming of the transit
Stargazing after sunset
