Understanding Variable Stars Presented by Dr. John Percy, professor emeritus, University of Toronto, Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics
Most stars vary in brightness; they are "variable stars". They may, for example, be eclipsed by a companion star or planet, or pulsate (vibrate), or flare, erupt, or explode. Variable stars provide astronomers with unique and important information about stellar processes, and about the nature and evolution of stars. Skilled amateur astronomers make significant contributions to variable star research, especially through the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO), founded in 1911. In this presentation, Dr. Percy will give an overview of variable star astronomy, how amateurs can and do contribute to the field, how you can learn more about variable stars, and how to observe and study them.
