The mandate of the Light Pollution Awareness Committee is to conserve and protect the nighttime environment as a heritage resource, use environmentally responsible outdoor lighting, and build public awareness with the objective to enact public policy and reduce light pollution.
We are NOT against outdoor lighting. We are FOR quality outdoor lighting.
We are FOR the protection of the night sky as a heritage resource, for its natural value and scientific interest.
Our goal is to get from this...
To this ...
As a result, we save energy, reduce our dependence on fossil fuels,
reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make a positive impact on climate change.
The first image above is what the sky typically looks like from a city or large town - ablaze with light that has been allowed to shine upwards where it serves no useful purpose.
This wasted light is wasted energy, produced with fossil fuels that create greenhouse gases, leading to global warming and climate change.
Moreover, the stars that were once visible have now disappeared from view.
With properly installed and appropriately used outdoor lighting, sky glow can be significantly reduced to bring back the view of the majestic sky as shown in the second image above.
